I just finished reading “Alien on Earth” and have to say it is truly a classic. While storyline may have been a bit over-used during this period, it just goes to show you just how paranoid of a nation we were and what could happen if a space-ship landed from the sky! Here's a synopsis of the story:
An alien spaceship moving at an incredible speed touches down in Chicago. Dumbfounded bystanders are awed by the size of the ship when suddenly the ship's hatch opens and an alien figure exits from the ship. When the alien tries to communicate with the earthlings, the people believe that the alien is in pain after horrible noises are spoken. Suddenly the US Army is on the scene to investigate the situation. Soon enough, the world begins to hear of the alien's arrival on Earth. Nations from all over the world are wondering what the alien wants and begin accusing every other nation of trying to trick them in a Classic Cold War scene. Finally, after discussions at the U.N. are over, it is decided that the Alien and the spaceship must be destroyed! After a direct attack, missiles are bounced back from the force field that surrounds the alien. Once again, the Army decides to flex more muscle by exploding the A-Bomb nearby to show how mighty the earth really is. The alien then decides to go back on the ship and fly off. People begin to cheer that the alien's threat is over thanks to the atomic firepower that saved them. Once in flight, the alien calls back to it's superiors stating that the earth is inhabitable! It is still in the atomic age and should be quarentined for another 1000 years! Thus the opportunity for the aliens to teach the human race how to reach the stars has passed…maybe forever if they don't destroy themselves first!
