“The Carbon Copy Man”! This was a low point for Thor, even in this early period. Al Hartley stepped in for Kirby, and while a good artist on the humor and teenage strips, he did not make the cut with super-heroes. Thor looked almost as anemic as Don Blake!

I am inclined to agree with my esteemed colleague Professeur Caputo. Marvel, at this point, seemed to put special emphasis on some books and little emphasis on others. Thor, Ant-man, Strange Tales and Iron Man (certainly with some exceptions) seemed to be the books that were done fast and were having trouble finding their way. On the other hand, Fantastic Four, Spiderman and the Hulk seemed to have life and direction right from the early issues. I was a child of nine when this comic book came out. I remember that I avoided Thor at the stands and when I finally received one as a “favour” at a birthday party and read it, I thought that it was just as bad as it seemed to be when glancing through it at the local variety store. Rereading this issue in the Marvel Essentials, it still doesn't give me much of a spark.

Crappy issue, but I've always enjoyed the way Kirby drew ice and snow.

I bought JIM #90 when it was new, due to the god of thunder, Thor, one of my favorite Marvel super-heroes, and the cool sci-fi cover. As a kid in 4th grade, I never really paid too much attention to the quality of the art or story, I just liked the new wave of Marvel super-heroes. As an adult, I can see certain flaws in the artwork & stories of some of the comic books, but I still like them as much now as I did as a kid. I think that it's the magic that a comic book can make for a kid or adult that's most important to me. I still own this JIM issue as an adult, and I still like it.
