John Peterson
History: In the “future” year 1975, scientist John Peterson defected from the West to join with the Communist forces. Peterson promised to show the Communists how to win the Cold War. Taken to the ruling city of Kruminski, Peterson had a huge plastic dome built over the city which would protect it from a nuclear attack. Upon completion of the dome, the Soviets then planned a nuclear strike against the U.S. and as a “reward” they returned the traitorous Peterson to American soil. As Premier Zorkon pressed the button to begin the attack, he found his entire domed city of Kruminski launched by hidden rockets into space, thus removing the ruling city from the face of the Earth and ending the threat of the Reds; these events revealed that Peterson's “treachery” was only a hoax to achieve world peace.
Height: 6 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: John Peterson was a leading, multi-talented scientist working for the United States whose knowledge encompassed many areas including plastics and rocketry.
Comment: Although it was stated at the end that this story was only an “imaginary tale”, writer Roy Thomas once said in the “Why Not?” text piece in What If? (vol. 1) # 1 that these “imaginary stories” actually took place on an alternate Earth, so maybe this story “really” did happen…

A real fun tale! Intense, and quirky! This IS Kirby and Marvel, even with the red menace storyline!
