Meet... the Monster!

Monster Isle

History: The desolate island known as “Monster Isle” was used as a base by the would-be world conqueror known as The Mole Man because of the network of tunnels that ran beneath it. The tunnels led to the Earth's core and were populated with subterranean monsters. The Mole Man established an underground empire and mastered the strange creatures, which included The Mole Man's Monster and a three-headed guardian monster. The Mole Man conducted attacks on the surface world until he was opposed by The Fantastic Four on their first adventure. The Mole Man apparently destroyed Monster Isle in an atomic blast, although it was seen on several other occasions.

Some of the Mole Man's other monsters later introduced included a Megataur and a flying whatsit known only as 'Skreeal'

In The Monster Hunters adventure, it was established that Monster Island was near Japan. The Monster Hunters adventure occurred chronologically before the Fantastic Four's first adventure, and it was revealed that the monsters of Monster Island were mutate creatures created by Kro, warlord of the subterranean Deviant race.

Can A Comment Save the World?!?

I always thought that Monster Isle was located somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle - putting it in the Atlantic. FF 347-349 mentions this specifically. Sounds like its No-Prize time!

Monster Isle ! Is this a place where monsters go to retire ? Is it a place where they go to train ? Or is it just a place they go to hang out because no one accepts them for what they are ? It could be all of these reasons, but mainly it`s a place they can call home. And that`s where the one and only Mr. Mole Man is in charge because he just like they are strange and unusual creatures. Forced to live in the darkness for the light has too many unpleasent memories.

I always thought the Mole Man was underrated.. With all that power and back up at his disposal he could be a force to be reckoned with…

Looking at The Monster Isle you can kinda detect a monster face in the mountain itself. The dark areas for the eyes, a small jagged line for a nose and a dark open cave for the mouth. Kind of looks like a monster face…..

Yeah, you're right. In the 30 years since I've first seen this story, that's the first time I noticed that little detail. Good eyes. (Maybe it's one of Spragg's buddies)

Wasn't Monster Island featured in various FF issues as well as the JLA/AVENGERS crossover and in the entire run of WARLOCK AND THE INFINITY WATCH?

Dear GDF: I believe you'e right on both counts!

I always thought MI was great. When it appeared in JLA/AVENGERS, Marvel did a wonderful thing..They actually brought back classic Lee/Kirby/Ditko Silver Age monsters and put them on the Island. (Although for some reason they moved MI to off the coast of Russia as opposed to the Bermuda Triangle). This was ingenious. It's a way Marvel can acknowledge their pre-superhero past and give all those wonderful monsters a home in the Marvel Universe

Hopefully Marvel will use this locale more often in the future.

Just a heads up that Monster Island is in the current Incredible Hulk arc from issue 77-81.

In Fantastic Four Index#1

The Monsters of Monster Isle (first
appearance….Monster Isle is located in the Bermuda
Triangle and is not to be confused with Monster
Island, the residence of Godzilla and other monsters
located near Japan;

This is from Fantastic Four Index#1, page 2. It seems
to me that the only reason that Olshevsky mentioned
this would be if Godzilla's Monster Island existed on
Earth-616.

Uncanny X-Men I#181 also indicates that the Monster Island near Japan does exist on Earth-616, since someone mentions that he checked in with Monster Island.

Aside from that, Conspiracy#1 suggests that the US government dumped many of the monsters found near Monster Isle or Monster Island.

How about a story with both the Mole Man and Tyrannus on Monster Isle ?

............. Bob T :: 03 May 2006

Isn't it entirely possible… that Monster ISLE and Monster ISLAND are simply two separate places? There is a possiblity that there are more islands out there as well. Like let's say an island south of Africa west of Austrailia and East of South America… shrouded in fog… where monsters live (like Skull island. With a comics ability to have islands shrouded by magic, science (man-made or alien) or simple natural phenomoen… there could be dozens that allow giant creatures to hide.
Doctor Demonicus could have set up a few sanctuarys all over the globe (After all. if he could build a floating space plateform… I doubt equipting an island for eventual use would be much of an endeavor for him).

More on Monster Island
Fantastic Four#314 shows that portals exist in Subterranea, so that would explain the inconsistency of the placement of Monster Island/Isle from the Bermuda Triangle to near Japan.

In an any event, numerous issues have shown that the Japanese do have a Monster Island that they dump monsters on.

I guess the Bloodstone files also said something on Monster Island. I am not sure.

Dear Editor,
I liked the retcon story of the Mole Man first coming to Monster Isle published in Marvel Universe a few years ago. It said in words to the effect of, ” Here is where it all began.”
