Meet... the Monster!

Sporr

History: In a Transylvanian village (in a castle supposedly once used by Doctor Frankenstein to create a monster), an American scientist experimented on his “growth” ray machine. The scientist trained the growth beam on a single-celled amoeba. An angry mob of villagers burst into the lab and took the scientist into custody for conducting forbidden experiments. The growth ray continued to bombard the amoeba. By daybreak, the monstrously huge amoeba burst out of the castle and slithered to the village; the villagers called the creature “Sporr” after a monster out of legend. Sporr destroyed several buildings. The scientist coated himself with sugar and acted as human bait; he lured Sporr to a quicksand pit, where Sporr sank from sight.

In modern times, Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four created duplicates of four monsters, including a duplicate of Sporr, to battle Dr. Doom.

Height: Inapplicable
Demonstrated Powers: Sporr was a shapeless, slithering blob of protoplasm. It was large enough to engulf and destroy buildings. At one point, Sporr was blown apart with dynamite, but the pieces reformed into the original mass. Sporr had no intelligence, it only reacted to stimuli.

Comment: In Daring Mystery Comics # 5 (June 1940), Dr. Dork created similar protoplasmic creatures when he battled The Fiery Mask.

Comment: In The Mighty Thor #'s 256 and 257, the Norse thunder god battled an amoeba-like space creature also called Sporr. There is no known connection between the two creatures, so this can be thought of as a mere coincidence.

Comment: Sporr should not be confused with the Inhuman introduced in Avengers # 376, also named Sporr.

Comment: In some appearances, Sporr has been depicted with eyes; these depictions can be thought of as erroneous as Sporr was only a blob with no facial features.

This is one of the first Lee-Kirby monster tales I ever saw as a very small child. Most stories featuring blob-like creatures were scary to me back then. Along with “Taboo”, this is the one I remember best.

My favourite Kirby monster. But why does Sporr have eyes on the cover and splash page and not in the main story?

In Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man#31(6/79) Spider-Man fought an immense unicellular Amoeboid Creature created by the first Carrion called the Spider-Amoeba. Ignore this I'm just checking to see if I regained my ability to send the words — ,Death,Demon,Demonstrate,Dead,Murder, and Gas.
