The Insect Man
History: As part of a space exploration experiment, Sgt. Mason was locked in a capsule and lowered into the depths of the Earth, all to test the effects of isolation on humans. After nine days in the capsule, Mason heard a knocking coming from outside the capsule. He opened the hatch, and was siezed by a colossal humanoid insect creature. The giant insect man took Mason back to a subterranean insect city populated by others like the insect man. Hearing the creatures thoughts, Mason learned that they regarded him as an insect. Mason was given to a child creature as a pet. Mason escaped and returned to the capsule, which was then raised to the surface. Mason's story was written off by his superiors as an hallucination, although a custodian cleaning out the capsule found a huge insect hair (which he threw into the garbage, not knowing what it was).
Height: 60 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The giant insect men were humanoid in shape (having only two arms and two legs). They demonstrated no special powers, but did show signs of developing an advanced civilization, with cities and technology.
Comment: In X-Men: The Hidden Years # 4, the mutant Magneto stated that low-level subterranean radiation in the “Savage Land” made everyone mildly telepathic, thus allowing people from diverse cultures to communicate with each other (which explained how everyone seemed to speak English). It is possible that Sgt. Mason was exposed to some of the same radiation, as he was able to understand the thoughts of the insect men.
Comment: Speculation - It is possible that the giant insect men were the result of an experimant conducted by the subterranean Deviant race to create a slave labor work force.

I have vague memories of reading this story in Where Monsters Dwell # 19 when I was in first grade. I also vaguely remember the back-up features.

I thought the janitor sweeping with the broom at the end was a nice touch.
This was a great story. One of my favorites.

no,i dont…think so…he was pretty evil in the story, but the COLLOSUS statue later became a hero under the name ''IT''THE LIVING COLLOSUS,so did henry pym from ASTONISH #27,and so did SPIDERMAN from AMAZING FANTASY#15……BUT YOU PROBABLY DIDNT KNOW THAT,since spiderman, the hulk, the x-men,captain america, the fantastic four, blade, etc. are all such obscure characters, not at all legendary characters like:CAT-MAN,THE WHIP,REX DEXTER OF MARS,DR.NEMESIS,FLY-MAN,STEEL STERLING,AIR MAN,BLUE BOLT,THE GREEN TURTLE and all those awesome characters everyone knows about………in case you cant tell im a golden-age fan being a jackass.
