The Thing
History: Pilot Ben Grimm flew an experimental rocket into space, accompanied by three companions. The rocket flew into a cosmic ray storm, which transformed the crew of four, granting them with fantastic powers. Grimm was transformed into the monstrous Thing, and the four super-powered individuals joined forces as The Fantastic Four.
The Thing encountered several monsters with the Fantastic Four, including Giganto, Rorgg, The Blip, The Two-Headed Thing, and Grottu. The Thing has also had several battles with The Incredible Hulk, The Skrulls, and Kurrgo. The Thing once teamed-up with Wonder Man to battle Xemnu the Living Titan/Hulk.
In the early days of his career, the Thing would at times unexpectedly revert back to human form, but as his body became more “comfortable” with his transformation, the change became permanent. The Thing's appearance also evolved over the years, at first having a skin-covering akin to a dinosaur hide, it presently has more of a rock-like appearance
Height: 6 ft.
Demonstrated Powers: The Thing had great strengeth, and was able to bend steel and batter through concrete. The Thing was invulnerable to artillary fire.

Sounds like you're thinking of Marvel Two-In-One Annual # 7 - “And They Shall Call Him Champion!” from 1982, with guest appearances by Thor, The Hulk, Colossus, Sasquatch, etc. I'd suggest using an Internet Search Engine for this issue (I found one for sale for $3.00). Good luck!

The Thing is such an underrated character. He has been around for so long yet his character gets disrespected. I mean I know that his main characteristic is his toughness and he shows it by taking a beating and coming back for more. I think that over many years that Marvel has gone too far with this formula and the Thing takes too many beatings and ends up looking like a punk. Marvel gives 100 level strength to useless characters like Drax, or annoying characters like Sub-mariner. The Thing should have 95 ton strength at the least since his battles with the Hulk are classic. Also, he is more popular and used more often that Hercules, Drax, Gladiator, & Wonder-Man. Marvel should just respect his character because of his longevity and draw him big & boxy like the Hulk and Juggernaut not as a 6ft normal sized guy. The Thing used to be drawn as big as the Hulk. Its clobbering time!!

Rather a mistaken pin-up page, though… “The strongest man-like creature on the face of the Earth?” It's been stated many times over the the Hulk is somewhat stronger.

Joe,
The pin-up page here is from FF #2 which was printed months before The Incredible Hulk #1. And even then, The Thing was stronger. It wasn't until his continued exposure to Gamma Rays that The Hulk actually became stronger.

He was originally the strongest in the world. Later on The Hulk, Hercules, and Thor all came along and each of them to some degree or another displaced him.
He came first and should be remembered for that.

Well, I finally found a place to talk about my all time favorite superhero of all time. In his essence, the Thing is the epitome of a super-hero. He did not choose to become superpowered but he deals with his issues and uses his powers for good. My one regret about the Thing is that I believe he is sometimes used as 'comic relief.' I've found that lately in his comics he rarely does more then toss bad guys aside or punch things once and it's over. The Thing is a tough, extremely powerful being and he should be used and drawn that way. He is also a favorite because he often does get a beatdown but he keeps coming for more. There was an issue back in the 90's, I think in the Infinity gems arc where all those evil dopplegangers are created. The issue where the Thing fights his evil doppleganger counterpart is one of the greatest issues I have ever read. The fight ranges throughout New York City and he has to use all his strength and cunning to win. It is the Thing at his best and in all honesty I found it inspiring, I think the Thing imself is inspiring. I love the whole Monster with a heart of Gold character, I think they are the best. Anyway I had to get that off my chest. And just so I can say I said it, My dream would be a Marvel Team -up of Thing, Wolverine and Cap.
